Day 1…173 More to Go (Hopefully not as Many Snow Days)

I am never surprised at the energy that comes to school on the first day. If we could only capture it the way they do in Monsters Inc., we would never have an energy crisis. School is off and running and we will open our year with an all school mass tomorrow. As a faculty we have committed three more “C” words to our active vocabulary this year: care, captivate and catapult. They are vital parts to how we will educate and learn from our kids this year.

I have thought a great deal about the message for our students. “Make people feel great.” It is a simple message and powerful at the same time. How we feel is a direct result of how people treat us. Sometimes making people feel great will mean saying sorry. Other times it will mean complimenting them. Sometimes it will mean standing up for a classmate who needs you. Other times it will be a smile to a friend. Sometimes it will be sitting with someone who is by themselves. Other times it will be encouraging a teammate on the basketball court. Students will be presented with many opportunities to care for others. Be aware and show your classmates how you care for them. I read this quote the other day at it is so true, “how you make others feel about themselves, says a lot about you.”

Our goal this year is to make people feel great. It all starts with how we feel. We all accomplish so much when we feel cared for, supported, encouraged, challenged and loved. We take risks when we know we have support. We challenge ourselves and others when we know we have a champion behind us. We make those who are down feel loved with an arm around the shoulder. Words can help with this, but our actions truly make others feel cared for. A community that commits to “making people feel great” shows the character needed to stand up for what is right, creates an amazing learning environment and builds a school filled with children and adults who feel great about themselves and their peers.

This is what we are called to do. This is what will make a difference. This is what will make #thebestyearever.

People will forget what you said.

People will forget what you did.

But people will never forget how you made them feel.
